Baghdad and Her Architects
Round-table discussion
Saturday, March 3
Art Jameel takeover at Nadi Al Quoz, Alserkal Avenue
11am – 1:30pm
Join us for a round-table discussion organised as part of the public programme for Plan for Feminist Greater Baghdad, a solo exhibition by Ala Younis, co-produced by Art Jameel and Delfina Foundation. The exhibition is currently on show simultaneously at Project Space Art Jameel, Alserkal Avenue, Dubai, and at Delfina Foundation, London.
Plan for Greater Baghdad traces the history of monuments in Baghdad designed by architects and artists during the multiple political shifts in Iraqi governments.
This discussion goes beyond images and documents found within archives to investigate: the local architects’ micro-histories; foreign and Japanese contractors’ projects in Iraq; researching Baghdad’s architectural history via publishing; the Metabolist movement; and reflections on Baghdad’s modernist design and planning in revealing alternative narratives.
The discussions – in addition to the material featured in the research annex in the exhibition – help inform the project’s ongoing research, and the Jameel Arts Centre’s library and its focus on arts histories of the UAE and the GCC.
