The Jameel House of Traditional Arts / Jeddah
This multiscalar conversation brings together Todd Reisz’s urbanist perspective and Ahmad Angawi’s detailed approach to discuss heritage in a fresh, relevant way. Heritage will be explored beyond the traditional themes of conservation and preservation to challenge the role of the architect and designer in formulating proactive and innovative approaches to heritage in the context of today’s rapidly changing Gulf cities.
The conversation will be held at the Jameel House of Traditional Arts / Jeddah, Art Jameel’s centre for heritage activities in the old town of Jeddah. Since opening in 2015, the Jameel House of Traditional Arts / Jeddah has welcomed artisans and contemporary artists to its traditional arts workshops and one-year programme, delivered by the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts, and has pioneered the use of digital technology in the recording of endangered heritage in the old town. As a bridge between Jeddah’s past and future, and located in one of the traditional coral-stone houses of the old town, this is a perfect venue for Reisz and Angawi’s discussion about the future of heritage.
